The future of food production hinges on an important question: How do we feed the world’s growing population without compromising our natural resources? Both dairy and beef farmers feed our population and hold the keys to vital climate solutions. At Halter, we’re on a mission to enable farmers to run the most productive and sustainable farms. Farmers are using Halter to break free from the time-intensive constraints of conventional farming. They’re growing more grass, increasing milk production and/or helping their cattle gain more weight (for beef farming) and improving the health and well-being of their cows.
We bridge deep tech into farming. Halter enables farmers to remotely shift, virtually fence and proactively monitor their cows’ health and behaviour. Can you imagine watching 500 cows or cattle walk calmly towards the milking shed or their next break? No quad bikes, no dogs, no fences. Just a mob of cows walking at their own pace. People say it looks like magic. Our customers are revolutionising farming with Halter. It's changing lives and transforming an industry.
People join Halter because they want to do meaningful work. By joining us you’ll be solving challenging problems within a talented team and a culture built for high performance. Our team out-think, out-work and out-care. We’re committed to delivering real change in the world - this isn’t easy, and in truth, we love that it’s hard. We’re backed to deliver on a mission that matters by Tier 1 investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck and Icehouse ventures.

About the role
Are you interested in watching over the lives of millions of cows? Does the thought of working with world-class software engineers excite you? Are you up for the challenge of building highly available, real-time embedded applications to operate in ever-changing environments?
We’re looking for mid to senior-level C++ Software Engineer to develop cutting-edge solutions for our solar-powered smart cow collars and infrastructure. You'll be joining our Animal team where we focus on virtual fencing, remote shifting and automatic heat and health detections of cows and cattle.
We’re looking for someone who is curious and always looking to learn and grow. Someone who is never satisfied with just the status quo, but cares about doing the little things right. We want an engineer who has an unwavering passion for technology. We are after those who love both working autonomously and collaborating with others to come up with the best possible solutions and can get stuff done simply, quickly, and efficiently.
You will be working in a first-class team who are passionate about what they do. Emerging from the likes of Tesla, Trademe, Emirates Team New Zealand etc, we are a forward-thinking team that enjoys making a difference and improving the lives of people, animals, and the environment every day. Our knowledge-share and collaborative approach is paramount to our success and ingrained in our work ethic and our product. Engineers who are interested in adding value to our journey will undoubtedly thrive here at Halter.

What your day could look like

  • Hands-on development in modern C++ delivering tested and reliable software through to production
  • Take ownership of key business outcomes as required and work with other teams across the business to ensure a successful result
  • Help foster a cross-functional agile team environment by encouraging cross-pollination of roles, challenging the team to continuously inspect and improve, and encouraging collaboration and task sharing
  • Input into all software design decisions and technical direction
  • Contribute to the high-level systems architecture and help to ensure the architectural vision is carried out by the various development teams
  • Develop build systems, test automation, and other tools to enable efficient software development and rapid iteration
  • Maintain high levels of communication with fellow engineers and other teams about product requirements, timelines, risks, and priorities
  • Bring new technical insights and best practices from the industry into the company, so we can continually learn and grow
  • Assisting with the hiring, training, and mentoring of software personnel to help build and grow a world-class engineering team

What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience in software development with a strong command of C++ programming.
  • Experience with microservices architecture and data pipeline frameworks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to write clean, readable, and maintainable code.
  • Experience with version control tools, preferably Git.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • ~3-6 years of experience working as part of a software team.
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS, CMake, and/or firmware development would be a nice to have
  • Experience with TypeScript, Java, Kotlin, or other backend programming languages would be a nice to have as well!

Halter is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace — a place where we can each be ourselves and do the best work of our lives. Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and under-represented groups of candidates tend to only apply when they meet every requirement. If you think you have what it takes but don’t necessarily tick every requirement on this job description, please still get in touch and apply to Halter. We’d love to chat to see if you’ll be an epic fit!
Our Office First Approach (For Auckland Offices)
We do have flexible working hours and you can work from home when you need to but we encourage our team to be in the office as much as you can.
We have an office-first approach because we would like to keep the opportunity for teams to have spontaneous interactions which in turn has allowed our team at Halter to foster strong relationships. Stronger relationships make it easier to disagree, give feedback, do meaningful work and as a result, be higher performing as a team.
This is applicable mainly for our Auckland office-based roles rather than on-the-road roles in teams such as Customer Success or Business Development teams.
