Research Scientist — Biophysical Characterization and Developability Assessment

AbCellera Biologics

AbCellera Biologics

Vancouver, BC, Canada
Posted 6+ months ago

AbCellera is breaking the barriers of conventional drug development to propel antibody-based medicines from target to clinic. We are a team of scientists, engineers, creatives, and business professionals who believe that advancing science enhances lives. We have developed technologies to unlock high-value drug targets, including antibody-drug conjugates and T-cell engagers for cancer, and complex transmembrane proteins for indications such as metabolic and endocrine conditions, pain, and autoimmunity.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Research Scientist who thrives in a fast-paced organization and brings in-depth understanding and leadership in analytical and biophysical characterization of biotherapeutics, as well as exceptional communication skills. Ideal candidates have a passion for drug development, understand what it takes to bring an antibody therapeutic from research into development, and will be driven by the opportunity to collaborate with teams from across the organization including early discovery, translational sciences, pre-clinical development, and CMC. Help us build a fully integrated next generation drug discovery platform that can rapidly turn discovered antibodies into a therapeutic lead ready for clinical testing.

How you might spend your days

  • Providing leadership in the application of biophysical characterization methods to assess the binding interactions and developability of biotherapeutics
  • Establishing strategy, developing workflows, and integrating new technologies to assess antibody binding properties including kinetics, affinity, epitope, and mechanism of action, to identify promising therapeutic candidates
  • Designing and executing detailed early formulation and stability studies to identify developable lead molecules
  • Analyzing and interpreting complex data sets including analytical, biophysical, binding, and in silico assessments, to nominate lead candidate antibody molecules to progress into clinical development
  • Providing protein science and biotherapeutic leadership within multidisciplinary drug discovery program teams
  • Mentoring junior scientists within a rapidly growing and dynamic team
  • Collaborating with teammates to leverage automation, data science, bioinformatics and machine learning to expand the throughput of antibody screening, including data curation, analysis and interpretation of large data sets
  • Acting as a subject matter expert for antibody developability and biophysical characterization

We’d love to hear from you if

  • You are energized by working with teammates to develop innovative workflows that revolutionize the quality and speed of therapeutic antibody discovery and optimization
  • You hold a PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, or Structural Biology, with an additional 8+ years of relevant experience including at least 4 years in the biopharma or biotechnology industries. Candidates with an MSc degree and 10+ years of relevant experience will also be considered
  • You have demonstrated expertise in the evaluation of protein interactions and mechanism of action using SPR, BLI, ITC, ELISA, Kinexa, AUC, or related technologies
  • You have experience applying analytical SEC, HIC, IEX, light scattering, CE-SDS, cIEF, DSF, DSC, mass spectrometry, or related techniques to assess sample quality and developability of biotherapeutics
  • You have an in-depth understanding of antibody sequences and structure, as well as common modifications and physical and chemical stability risks
  • You have experience managing and interacting with electronic lab notebook environments, and laboratory information and inventory management systems
  • You have a passion for science, technology, and innovation
  • You have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a cross-functional team
  • You have excellent decision-making and troubleshooting skills, as well as effective documentation and organizational skills with a high attention to detail
  • Supporting preclinical development of biologics, particularly bi-/multispecific antibodies, and helping to generate data that supported their clinical development is not new to you
  • You are comfortable writing formal reports with interpretations based on data you generated in complex biological systems to build mechanistic confidence in a target
  • You are self-motivated, and have the initiative to meet project goals under tight timelines

What we offer

AbCellera’s hiring range for this role is CAD $110,000 - 137,600 annually, commensurate with your education and job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to base salary, we offer equity, annual bonus dependent on team and company performance, and a 6% (non-match) RRSP contribution.

You will have a CAD $1,500 annual Active Lifestyle Allowance, annual vacation, and company-wide office closures (a real value to all!), opportunity for flexible work arrangements, professional development opportunities, and comprehensive health benefits. Scientific and technical mentorship is a priority. And you’ll find we prioritize teams and social groups to build community and connections across AbCellera.
